How to Apply

University of Toyama welcomes students from across the country and all over the world. There are 3 ways to apply.

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship student

We accept following Japanese Government (Monbukagakusyo) Scholarship student.

How to Apply

For those outside of Japan, Japanese government scholarship students are recruited and selected in two ways.

  • 1)Embassy recommendation
    Scholarship recipients are recruited and initially screened by a Japanese Embassy (or consulate general, depending on the country)
  • 2)University recommendation
    University of Toyama directly recommends the selected candidates to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

※ Domestic Selection is available only to privately-financed international students currently studying at a university in Japan. Applications may only be submitted after entering University of Toyama.

Exchange Students

The University accepts exchange students whose institutions have a university-level student exchange agreement with University of Toyama. Exchange students are able to learn their respective subject for a semester (6 months) or for two semesters (12 months). Application procedures differ depending on faculties. Please check the detailed information via web page relevant to your studies.

Privately Financed International Students

Students are divided into two categories; regular students and non-regular students. Degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students are categorized as regular students, while non-degree seeking students such as research students and exchange students are classified as non-regular students.

Enroll as a Regular Student

Standards for selection are basically the same for international applicants as for prospective Japanese applicants (Undergraduate/ Special Selection for Privately Financed International Applicants, Graduate/ General Admission, Special Selection for Privately Financed International Applicants). However, The University Toyama offers special admission examinations for non-Japanese students. They are usually announced in late October and held in late February of the following year at the University of Toyama.Please request application materials and detailed information from the Examination Section of the appropriate Admissions Office.

Enroll as a non-Regular Student

To enroll as a research student, the applicant must search for and contact an advisor in the faculty, graduate school, institute or center of his or her interest and then receive the advisor's approval. After this, the applicant must submit an admission form and the necessary documents. For further details, please refer to the each faculty or graduate school’s web page.

Faculties and Graduate Schools

Students on the MEXT scholarship, or any other scholarship funded by a foreign government

In order to promote the development of human resources in the countries concerned, some foreign countries send international students at the expense of the government of the country concerned, and the Japanese government cooperates with these countries at their request from the standpoint of actively promoting international cooperation. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) will make a request to the University of Toyama if you wish to enroll as an undergraduate student. If you wish to enroll as a graduate student or a research student, the MEXT will contact the relevant departments in consideration of your field of specialization, if the MEXT requests the University to accept you.
