Message from the Director

We strategically promote the internationalization of the University of Toyama. We support human resources who step out into the world.

It has been a long time since the importance of globalization has been emphasized in a number of circumstances, yet its substantial understanding and penetration in Japanese society seems incomplete. Indeed, it is a concern that global presence and competitiveness of Japanese academic research and corporate activities have witnessed a decline. In contrast, neighboring Asian countries have developed quite rapidly and have even overtaken Japan in certain instances. Thus, mere conversation and brief interactions between Japanese and foreign students and reciprocal researchers is insufficient when it comes to international exchanges at the university level. I believe that more substantial activities to facilitate international collaborative research—such as toward the production of international patents—and education to cultivate global competitiveness are required in the next phase of international exchange at the University of Toyama.

The University of Toyama promotes academic globalization through its philosophy: “The University of Toyama will uphold a global standard of education and research integrated with life sciences, natural sciences, arts, and social sciences, and is open to the regional community and to the world. The university will nurture students with a strong sense of mission and creativity based on respect for human dignity. We will make contributions to local, regional, and international communities, and promote the harmonious development of science, art, culture, society, and the natural environment.” Based on this, the Organization for International Education and Exchange, along with the International Affairs Division of the Administrative Bureau will strongly support cooperation between nine schools and other organizations to promote worldwide expansion of distinctive efforts as the university’s global mission.
